XDCAM is a broadcast production system from Sony, using professional optical disc media, which is based on blu-ray technology. Professional optical disc media is not unlike recordable DVD or CD in the way it works, but built tough for broadcast applications, and with a capacity of 23.3 GB and 50GB. This gives between 45 and 170 minutes of broadcast quality video and audio on the disc, in a choice of industry standard formats. The new XDCAM HD system adds a range of HD formats to the system.
XDCAM can work just like tape if needed, and all products in the range come with standard analogue and digital video inputs and outputs. The system is also designed to be ‘IT’ friendly, allowing for industry standard MXF HD or SD video and audio files to be transferred off the disc, over a choice of 2 interfaces (i.Link or Ethernet) at faster than real time speeds. Add to this metadata to enrich the video material, and proxy editing, and support from most non linear editing products including Avid and Final Cut Pro and you have a system that can significantly improve the production process in terms of speed, efficiency and subsequently cost saving. XDCAM is ideal for every application from single camera shooting, to multi camera, high shooting ratio productions like reality/ magazine/ news or current affairs. The cameras can also shoot at 25p , and have already been used successfully on several Australian projects destined for film print. Some XDCAM HD Camcorders also offer variable framerate capability, allowing cost effective slow motion capability, in high definition. It really is a highly versatile system! The new PDW700 XDCAM HD camera is set to replace Digital BETACAM in the Australian market and already been adopted by the Nine and TEN networks for news and production, as well as many freelancers throughout the country.
