The Atomos Ninja 2 Portable Recorder/Monitor is a HDMI smart production recorder, monitor and playback deck. The Ninja 2 combines multiple devices – external monitor, capture card, playback deck and cut edit suite – into a single affordable tool. It’s lightweight, tough and robust for operation in the field.

  • 800 x 480 On-Camera Monitor & Recorder
  • Records 1080p, 10-Bit, 4:2:2 from Sensor
  • ProRes or DNxHD Encoding and Playback
  • 4.3" Touchscreen Display
  • HDMI Input & Output
  • Stores to 2.5" HDDs/SSDs
  • Monitoring & SmartLog Editing Tools

The Atomos Ninja 2 Video Recorder is an HDMI recorder and 800 x 480 resolution monitor that records up to 1080/30p/60i resolution directly from your camera's sensor to an HDD or SSD in Apple's ProRes or Avid's DNxHD edit-ready codecs.

Color precision records at 10-bit, even from an 8-bit sensor, and color sampling at 4:2:2. Recording an 8-bit signal in 10-bit won't increase the quality of the signal but will let you work with the signal in post-production as if it's 10-bit, meaning you can add effects and not see jagged lines and other artifacts. Being able to record direct from the sensor lets you bypass your camera's compression and instead have the first compression be in an edit-ready codec. Generally, the less compressions, the less image degradation.

The operating system is AtomOS 3.0, featuring sophisticated focus and exposure tools and SmartLog, which lets you log in and out points on your footage and tag clips with keywords such as "good shot" and "bad shot."

Full Feature list of the Atomos Ninja2 Field Recorder / Monitor

10-bit 4:2:2 / 220Mbps / 2.5" HDD or SSD

  • The Ninja-2 takes any uncompressed HD or SD source and encodes it in real-time to 10-bit, 4:2:2 Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD at up to 220Mbps.
  • Because Ninja is portable, it can record from the ultimate image source, the sensor of the camera.
  • Recording is always in 10-bit, even from an 8-bit source. Color registries are added for integration into higher bit-depth graphics from CG, animation and special effects. This avoids banding and makes editing and grading, in fact any precision effect, more accurate.

  • Can I use the Atomos Ninja2 to replace the SxS cards in my Sony PMW200? Will it affect the capability of saving the maximum bit rate of 50 mbps. Presuming it will work with the pmw200 would you connect it via the HDMI port?

The Ninja2 can be used in conjunction with the SxS cards of the PMW200 to dual record and backup your footage. Alternatively, you can use the Ninja2 to record a higher quality signal in ProRes or DnX codecs and use the 50Mbs XDCAM codec recorded to the SxS cards as proxy files.

The Ninja2 would connect to the PMW200 via the HDMI output. However, this means that the HD-SDI output will become disabled.

Video & Audio Recorders

  • I wanted to confirm whether the Ninja 2 is compatible with a Sony V1P? It would be great to be able to use Ninja, and use tape as backup.

Yes, the Ninja2 can be used with your Sony V1P using the camera's HDMI connection.

  • Does the NInja2 include hard drives?

No, Atomos do not include Hard Drives with the Ninja or Samurai kits. A full list of recommended drives can be found on the Atoms website, here: http://www.atomos.com/discovery-what-drives/
