Professional 4K Video Recording

The LUMIX GH4 builds on the legacy of the renowned LUMIX GH3s image quality and world class video capabilities. Now supporting 4K quality video, the Panasonic LUMIX GH4 allows photographers and cinematographers to explore above and beyond with in camera creative options and astonishing focus control that sets the new standard for mirrorless hybrid photography.

Flexible Frame Rate Options

Standout video capabilities offered by the camera include ultra-high-bitrate 4K (100 Mbps) and Full HD recording (200 Mbps); global frame rates, allowing professionals to shoot for overseas markets; and Variable Frame Rate for slow and fast motion shooting at up to 96 frames per second in Full HD. A new optional interface unit ensures high performance when connecting to professional external monitors and recorders.

Pro Video Camera Features

The DMC-GH4 offers unlimited 4K video recording (Cinema 4K: 4096x2160 / 24 fps) and QFHD 4K: 3840x2160 / up to 30 fps) in MOV/MP4v. The DMC-GH4 is also capable of recording Full- HD video with an ultra high bitrate at 200 Mbps (ALL-Intra) or 100 Mbps (IPB), which does not have a recording time limit. Video formats available include MOV, MP4 (LPCM), AVCHD Progressive and AVCHD at a variety of frame rates according to usage. For global use, the system frequency is selectable between 59.94Hz (23.98Hz) / 50.00Hz / 24.00Hz.

Interface Unit (AG-YAGHG)

Panasonic has developed an Interface Unit (AG-YAGHG) which adds professional in/out connectors to the DMC-GH4. It provides four Full HD (4:2:2 / 10-bit) parallel outputs and these can be used for 4K (4:2:2 / 10-bit) monitoring - both with time code. The XLR inputs (2ch) are line or mic switchable. When connecting a microphone, volume can be controlled for L and R separately, and can be monitored via the LED audio level display on the back of the unit. The 12V DC IN allows the use of large-capacity professional batteries or continuous power supply from an AC adaptor.

Lumix DMW-YAGH Interface Unit for GH4

  • What SD card does the Panasonic Lumix GH4 need to record 4K?

The GH4 requires a new class of SD card to record 4K reliably, as indicated on the chart below. The card needs to have a speed rating of UHS3, which is different from the UHS-1 class 10 and 6 cards typically used to record HD. Panasonic released three new UHS3 cards at the launch of the GH4.Click Here For More Info

  • Software upgrades for the Panasonic Lumix AG-GH4 and AG-YAGH Interface Adapter have now been released

The Panasonic Lumix AG-GH4 Camera is updated to Ver 2.1. AG-YAGH Interface Adaptor is updated to Ver 1.1

Note:  For Panasonic DMC-GH4 owners, please go to the following site for firmware and upgrade instructions.

    Major Enhancements:

    • Timecode can be embedded in the HDMI output signal.
    • RSS (Recording Start/Stop) signal can be embedded in the HDMI output signal.
    • An FHD 30p/25p (native) output via HDMI is available while recording video in FHD at 30p/25p.
    • [Time Lapse Shot] Program is fixed to start recording at the designated time even when [summer time] is set.
    • [AG-YAGH] FHD at 30PsF / 25PsF output via SDI is available while recording video in FHD at 30p/25p

    • Playback performance of recorded 4K video is improved
    • When Summer Time setting is ON, Interval REC will not start at a set time. This issue is addressed in the new firmware version

    Upgrade instructions:

Format an SD card in camera. Extract the ZIP package, and then copy the extracted firmware files (“.ebn” file for AG-YAGH and “.bin” file for AG-GH4), to the root (upper directory) of the SD memory card.

Please refer to the upgrade procedure found at the same site as the software and carefully follow each step to complete the upgrade process.

N.B. Interface unit AG-YAGH must be updated while attached to AG-GH4
