The Sonnet Echo IIDV Rackmount is a professional-grade Thunderbolt 5 PCIe expansion chassis that brings full-length PCIe card support to modern Mac systems. Built for MacBook Pro, Mac mini (M4 Pro/M4 Max), and Mac Studio (M4 Max/M3 Ultra), this 2U rackmount system solves the expansion slot limitation by housing two full-height, full-length PCIe 4.0 x16 cards with dedicated bandwidth. Each slot gets its own Thunderbolt 5 controller delivering up to 6000 MB/s, making it ideal for bandwidth-intensive cards like video I/O interfaces, NVMe storage arrays, and high-speed network adapters. The 400W power supply with dual 75W auxiliary connectors handles power-hungry professional cards, while dual cooling fans maintain thermal performance during extended operation.
Dual Thunderbolt 5 Controllers for Maximum Performance
Unlike single-controller expansion systems that split bandwidth between multiple slots, the Echo IIDV uses two separate Thunderbolt 5 interfaces, one dedicated to each PCIe slot. This architecture delivers the full 6000 MB/s of PCIe bandwidth to each card simultaneously when connected to two Thunderbolt 5 ports on your Mac. For video professionals running capture cards alongside high-speed storage, or network engineers combining multiple 25Gb Ethernet adapters, this means no performance compromises or bandwidth contention between installed cards.
Professional Rackmount Integration
The rugged steel 2U enclosure integrates seamlessly into production environments with adjustable extension rails supporting rack depths from 406mm to 610mm (16 to 24 inches). The Echo IIDV module occupies half the enclosure width, leaving room to install an additional Echo module in the same rack space for even greater expansion density. This makes it practical for edit suites, broadcast facilities, and post-production environments where rack space is at a premium.
Thunderbolt 5 Speed and Compatibility
Thunderbolt 5 delivers up to 80 Gb/s bidirectional bandwidth, twice the speed of Thunderbolt 4, with the ability to boost to 120 Gb/s for display-intensive workflows. This headroom supports demanding applications like uncompressed 4K and 8K video capture, real-time colour grading with I/O cards, massive NVMe RAID arrays, and high-throughput network storage connections.
