Canon Speedlite EL-5 (Version 2)

Canon Speedlite EL-5 (Version 2) is a rechargeable flash for Canon EOS cameras with a multi-function shoe. It is designed for creators who need dependable control across portrait, event and location work, with a familiar interface and flexible setup options. The kit includes an LP-EL battery, stand and soft case, providing a practical starting point for mobile lighting in the studio or in the field.

Wireless control and operation

The EL-5 Version 2 supports Canon’s radio-based wireless flash system, with a transmission range of up to 50 metres. It can work with compatible Canon wireless flash units and transmitters, while the Canon Camera Connect app allows remote adjustment of flash intensity, flash compensation, synchronisation, flash groups and other settings. The joystick, control dial and high-definition LCD provide direct access to the flash controls, with custom C1, C2 and C3 modes for quickly recalling preferred setups.

Flash output and recycling

With 76 Ws of output and a manual range from 1/1 to 1/1024, the flash can provide strong illumination or subtle fill light. Recycling takes between 0.1 and 1.2 seconds, depending on the selected power level, while the LP-EL lithium-ion battery provides up to 350 full-power flashes per charge. The flash has a guide number of 60 metres at ISO 100 and 200 mm, and uses Canon’s E-TTL II / E-TTL automatic exposure system with compatible cameras.

Coverage and modelling light

The zoom head covers focal lengths from 24 to 200 mm, with automatic or manual adjustment. The built-in wide-angle panel extends coverage to 14 mm. A continuous LED modelling light provides a preview of illumination and shadows, supports autofocus assistance and offers five brightness levels. It can also help assess the effect of multiple flash units before taking a photograph.

Shoe connection and protection

The multi-function shoe provides advanced communication between the flash and compatible Canon EOS mirrorless cameras. This model cannot be mounted on Canon EOS digital SLR cameras or EOS R-series cameras with the original five-pin hot shoe, so camera compatibility should be checked before purchase. Dust and moisture resistance is provided by sealing around the shoe-locking mechanism and exterior joints. The unit measures approximately 14.0 x 12.4 x 8.1 cm and weighs approximately 590 g with the battery installed.
