The Sony ECMW5R Wireless Microphone Receiver is designed for Sony cameras with a compatible Multi Interface (MI) Shoe and built-in digital audio interface, while also supporting computers, mobile devices and cameras without the shoe. Pair it with ECM-W5T microphone/transmitters for cable-free production audio in interviews, presentations, documentaries and other single- or multi-person shoots.
Digital audio integration
Through a compatible Sony camera’s MI Shoe, the receiver supports audio capture at up to 96 kHz/24-bit or 48 kHz/32-bit float. Supported cameras can record 32-bit float audio directly in the video file, allowing quiet voices and sudden peaks to be adjusted in post-production. Simultaneous WAV recording is also available on compatible cameras. Input gain can be automatic or manually adjusted from -12 to +12 dB, with switchable noise-cut and low-cut functions.
Four-channel recording and wireless transmission
When used with ECM-W5T microphone/transmitters, the receiver supports up to four in-camera audio channels, allowing speakers to be recorded on separate tracks for easier editing. Low-latency transmission reaches up to 500 m in line-of-sight conditions. Bluetooth hopping technology and the wireless design help maintain stable connections and reduce dropouts in busy radio environments.
Monitoring and external microphone input
Compatible Sony Bluetooth LE Audio headphones can be used for cable-free monitoring during recording. The receiver can also record audio from the microphone in compatible Sony wireless headphones, including binaural recording for ambient sound with a sense of spatial depth. A mono 3.5 mm input accepts compatible external microphones, including lavaliers such as the Sony ECM-L1.
Timecode, device connections and operation
Timecode output supports accurate alignment in multi-camera workflows. In USB SYNC mode, a USB-C connection synchronises the receiver with compatible Sony cameras using timecode stored as video metadata. The receiver also supports USB Audio Class 2.0 recording with compatible computers and mobile devices, including 32-bit float audio. An AMOLED touchscreen, control wheel and status LEDs provide access to settings and recording information. Compatible cameras supply power through the MI Shoe, while standalone operation provides up to seven hours of use per charge.
